Tuition is built entirely around your kit, your interests, and what you want to be shooting. There’s no point learning studio lighting if your passion is the great outdoors — or wildlife technique if you really want to photograph your grandchildren. Tell me what excites you and we’ll go there.

Photography — any camera

DSLR, mirrorless, compact, film, or smartphone — any brand, any make, any model. We’ll work with the camera you actually own and the photos you actually want to take.

iPhone & smartphone photography

The best camera is the one you have with you. Get genuinely good results from your phone — composition, light, native controls, and the editing apps worth bothering with.

Adobe Lightroom

Organising and editing your photos properly. Catalogues, develop module, presets, exporting for print or web. The everyday tool most photographers should be living in.

Adobe Photoshop

When Lightroom isn’t enough — selections, layers, retouching, composite work. Learn what you actually need rather than wading through a 12-hour YouTube series.

Affinity Photo

A serious alternative to Photoshop without the subscription. Most of the same capabilities; we’ll work in whichever software you’ve actually got installed.

For genuine beginners, or people who’ve had a camera for years and never really learned to use it. Build a proper foundation across two sessions.

A week of photography during the school holidays for budding young photographers. Runs Monday to Friday, subject to diary availability.

Thirty years of mistakes I can save you making.

I’ve been working as a professional photographer for over thirty years — shooting all over the UK and around the world before settling into running the shop here on Marlborough High Street since 1992. Over the years that’s included assignments photographing Royalty, celebrities, and high-profile public figures, alongside the everyday editorial, portrait, and event work that pays the bills. Still shoot daily, including the official photography at Marlborough College.

That matters because the help you get isn’t a script. You’ll spend your hour with someone who’s already made every mistake worth making, used every camera worth using, and worked out which bits of every menu actually matter in real life.

And because the sessions are one-to-one, we go at exactly the pace that’s right for you — no being held back by a class, no being left behind. Just the bits you actually need.

Common questions

A few things people usually ask.

I’ve had my camera for years and still don’t really know what I’m doing. Is this for me?

Honestly, this is exactly who the training is for. Most people who book are not raw beginners — they’re people with capable cameras who’ve never had anyone walk them through it properly. One focused hour will usually move you further than five years of YouTube tutorials.

Can I bring my own camera and laptop?

Please do. Training is always built around your actual kit, your actual files, and your actual setup. We’ll work with the brand and model you’ve got — the more we can tailor it to what you go home and keep using, the more useful it is.

Where do sessions happen?

Wherever makes sense for what you want to shoot. There’s no point learning studio lighting if your passion is the great outdoors — or working on landscapes when you actually want to photograph your dog. We can be in the studio, out walking through Marlborough, in the countryside on the doorstep, or working with people, pets, or whatever subject matters to you. We’ll agree the right setup when you book.

Can my partner / friend / parent come too?

For the one-to-one refresher hours, sessions are normally just you — that’s where the value is. For the two-part beginners’ course, you can bring one friend along at half the price, so two people can do it together.

Do I need fancy software to do an editing session?

No. We’ll work in whatever you’ve already got — Lightroom, Photoshop, Affinity, or even just the editing tools built into your phone. If you’re trying to decide what to buy, that’s itself a useful conversation to have first.

My child wants to learn photography. How young is too young?

Holiday weeks are aimed at secondary-school-age young people upwards, though we’ve worked with motivated younger photographers too. I’m DBS checked for working with children, and for anyone aged 16 or under a paying chaperone (parent, guardian or trusted adult) needs to attend the sessions with them — half the regular price. Best to drop a message describing their age, what kit they’ve got, and what they’re interested in — we’ll work out whether it’s a fit.
