What you walk out with.
If you’re renewing or applying for a UK passport, your photo is delivered to the Passport Office as a digital code — not a printed photograph. We give it to you in two forms: emailed straight to you, and printed on a 6×4 photo with both the code and a small thumbnail of the photo itself.
When you reach the photo step of the online application at gov.uk/apply-renew-passport, select “I have a code to enter” and type in the eight-character code. That’s the whole step done. Keep the sheet safe until your new passport arrives.
Renewing several at once? When you’re doing passport photos for a whole family in one visit, the printed thumbnail matters. Use the code that belongs to the right person. Submitting one family member’s code under another family member’s application means a trip to the Passport Office to unpick the damage — so it’s worth being careful.
Need printed ID photos as well? We can print regular passport-format photographs at the same time for ID cards, work passes, gym memberships, and other applications. 6 for £6, 12 for £8, or 18 for £10.
- Decide what you need. We offer digital files, printed photos, or both — knowing in advance saves time when you arrive.
- A UK passport photo isn’t universally accepted. It’s a common assumption that a UK-format photo will work anywhere — it won’t. Every country sets its own dimensions, backgrounds, and paper requirements. Please check your destination’s rules before you arrive.
- UK and Irish digital codes are not interchangeable. Ireland has its own digital code system — a UK code won’t work for an Irish passport, and vice versa. Each is sovereign and separate. Tell us which one you need.
- Your photo must be from the last 30 days. A new passport requires a new photo, even if your appearance hasn’t changed.
